When new Brewmaster/Owner Clay Potter was in his late teens, he and his Mother would spend time each Friday night enjoying a different beer from around the world… little would they know that this introduction to craft beers would eventually lead them down their current path. Clay was studying Biochemistry at the University of Victoria and planning on a future in Genetics when he secured a co-op position as a microbiologist at local Brewery Lighthouse in Victoria, BC. From then on he was hooked. Under the guidance of Brew Master Paul Hoyne, Clay realized that his passion was brewing and never looked back. Upon graduation, Clay was hired full time at Lighthouse and continued to learn from Paul for the next 4 years. Looking to further his career, Clay applied and was excepted into the Brewing and Distilling Master’s Program at Heriot Watt University in Edinbourgh, Scotland. The program included numerous trips to European Countries to study their Brewing techniques. Clay fell in love with the European brewing and distilling culture and worked part time in popular Beer Bars in Edinburgh. After receiving his MSc in Brewing and Distilling, Clay went to work in Vancouver at Turning Point Brewery. He was lucky to meet a number of great Brewers from all over the world, but his passion was to open his own Brewery. Clay and Stepfather, Steve Ash, talked on numerous occasions about this endeavor but knew realistically it was a long way down the road. However, after just a few months at Turning Point, a late night call from a good friend of Steve’s brought to their attention a Brewpub that was for sale in Victoria. The name wasn’t published, but it didn’t take long for them to figure out it was the Moon Under Water Brewpub and the next day Steve went to check it out. Being the compulsive group that they are, Anne, Clay and Steve jumped head first into purchasing The Moon. The Team Comes Together All three are hands-on owners and each has brought an important element to the mix. Clay with his Brewing, , Anne a Bookkeeper and Steve as an owner/operator of a Metal Fabrication shop. There isn’t much that the 3 of them can’t handle. The support from family and friends has been overwhelming. With the energy of the 3 new owners the Brewpub immediately saw changes. The focus of the pub is to be a true “beer bar” which includes serving the beers in new glassware appropriate to the style of beer. Wings and Cask night was introduced on Wednesdays, and a popular local favorite “Music Bingo” on Friday. Guest beers, handpicked by Clay, will show case some of the best Craft Beers in British Columbia to be served alongside the house brewed beers. We were extremely lucky that the staff on hand at the time of the takeover have all proven to be outstanding employees, couldn’t be luckier with that! After some minor alterations, the German Brewhouse was restored to its original glory and now allows Clay to brew a wide variety of styles. The new Moon brands, introduced in November 2012, can be described as ‘German-fusion’ and are Clay’s West-coast interpretation of traditional German styles. These new beers include Potts Pils, Creepy Uncle Dunkel ,The Victorious Wiezenbock and Tranquility IPA. All beers are 100% natural, unfiltered and naturally carbonated.
