Shower Sales and Installation
Description
This seems pretty obvious, but shower walls require a lot more thought
than just something that surrounds the shower. I've already gone over
wall material in a previous entry, and this entry just covers walls as a
whole.
If you have the regular fiberglass shower, the shower wall is just the fiberglass sheet that is shaped into forms that create shelves, benches, and other shower accessories. You're pretty much set with whatever the designer has decided to create for your shower. You can buy various items with suction cups or frames in order to add to the design, but in the end what you see is what you get.
Tile showers on the other hand are completely designable. Tile walls are constructed tile by tile, with each tile attached to a backer board going from the bottom of the shower to the top. Because of this construction, you can create shelves, benches or any other type of shower add-on. These items can also be placed anywhere in the shower you want.
Just as with the entire shower construction, a middle ground between fiberglass and tile uses pre-made panels or sheets that you put together to create the shower wall. These walls are constructed by various methods. Some companies create homogeneous walls that have been created by pouring materials into molds of different shapes and sizes. Other companies create walls using different layers of materials and compounds that are sandwiched together and are covered by their own materials.
These panels are then attached to the backer board to create the shower. Many companies will have optional add-ons for shelves and benches that you can place in the shower any way you like, just like tile showers. These types of shower walls can often be modified with your own creations or materials, just make sure to check with the manufacturer to see if what you're doing is compatible.
